In the course of Demi Lovato’s Holy Fvck Tour, The singer has been performing her original “4 EVER 4 Me” mixed with a cover version of Goo Goo Doll’s smash hit “Iris.” And Tuesday night, at her New York concert, she took the song up a notch by inviting Goo Goo Dolls frontman Johnny Rzeznik on stage to surprise her with a duet of the single from 1998.
Nearly 25 years after the release of “Iris,” the track remains a top choice for an upcoming generation of artists, and everybody who is Taylor Swift to Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers covering the song. In 2021 Rzeznik got called to sing “Iris” onstage at a Billy Joel concert in the Goo Goo Dolls’ native Buffalo, New York.
In September., Lovato also managed to get Ashlee Simpson onto the stage for an appearance on stage for the first time to perform the song “La La,” which Lovato is also singing during the course of her North American tour. Simpson’s performance with Lovato will be her first appearance performing since January 2019 following an absence of ten years from performing live.
Before the release of their debut album Holy Fvck, the singer spoke with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1 about the influences that influenced the album, which included Simpson as well as Kelly Clarkson.
“I witnessed the transformation of her career as an artist change through the ages from R&B pop music to the soul. And I thought”Oh, that’s exactly what I’m looking to accomplish,” they said about Clarkson before adding “And there’s Ashlee Simpson’s “LaLa,” which made me think I’d like to do the same thing. That’s when I started to get motivated, and then I discovered bands like Paramore or Flyleaf.”
Lovato also spoke with Rolling Stone about getting into “a new era” of their music. “I’d like to put the rest of my music behind me and start fresh in this new era for this next album,” Lovato declared. “I’m not changing to the latest music. I’m just returning in time to where I came from!”
